Dodge Ram 1500s can be a great vehicle to have if you need to tow heavy loads. But as with any other type of car, they require regular maintenance and upkeep in order to keep them running well. One way that you can prevent your Dodge from having problems is by replacing the starter before it malfunctions.
This article will walk you through the process of replacing a starter on your Dodge Ram 1500. We’ll start by explaining what’s involved in this job, and then we’ll give you step-by-step instructions for how to do it yourself with minimal time or hassle.
Step One: Disconnect Battery and Jack Up Vehicle
Disconnect your vehicle battery before starting work so there is no risk of electric shocks. You’ll also need to jack up the driver’s side front tire if it isn’t already off the ground in order to access a starter cable connector below the fender well near where it attaches to the firewall at an angle.
Step Two: Remove Rear Wheel
You’ll need to remove the rear wheel assembly using either a lug wrench or a socket driver with an extension depending on its size (driver’s side vs passenger side). With this type of truck, there are two large rubber plugs towards the top that serve as access points for removing bolts holding wheels in place — they should require 32mm sockets. After removing these nuts, pull up from below until all edges go past their retaining clips then release.
Step Three: Remove Cables
Remove the two cables from their respective hooks by unscrewing them using a wrench or ratchet. These connectors, located near where they attach to the firewall at an angle, should be 16mm and may not require any additional hardware when reinstalling starter motors. The final cable connector will most likely have nuts that can be loosened just like those holding wheel in place — they may also use 14mm sockets instead of 32s so make sure whichever one you choose has the correct size.
Step Four: Remove Starter Motor
Underneath the driver’s side of vehicle, identify and remove starter motor mounting bolts with either a combination wrench or socket driver depending on their size (32mm). Lift it up off its clips then disconnect wiring harness from solenoid near where cables were connected to engine block.
Fit New Starter: When reinstalling parts for second time around during replacement process, make sure all connections made properly when assembling new part previously. Check for any loose or corroded hardware and tighten bolts if needed.
Step Five: Reinstall Starter Motor, Cables, Wheel
Hold starter motor up to its clips on the engine block then align mounting holes before using an extension in combination with a socket wrench (32mm) to bolt it down securely into place. Route rear cables through their respective clip while lining them up located near where they attach at firewall angle. Finally, reinstall wheel assembly onto vehicle by placing larger rubber plugs over bolts followed by securing nuts that were removed earlier using lug wrench or socket driver.
Step Six: Raise Car
Finish by placing wheel chocks on each side then test starter motor’s functionality with a quick jump start using jumper cables as an isolator between two vehicles’ batteries. If there is no response when pressing keyless remote button or turning ignition switch, turn off engine then reconnect cables just like they were originally — this time your installation process should have been completed successfully!
