The Dodge Ram 1500 is an American made full-sized truck, and it’s been around for a long time. The first generation of the vehicle was released in 1994, when it won Motor Trend Truck of the Year. It has had many different engine configurations over the years, but one thing that hasn’t changed is how to change front shocks on a Dodge Ram 1500. We will show you how to do this job quickly and easily!
Step by Step Instructions:
- Remove the front tires from the vehicle.
-
Place a jack and block under the frame of the truck, then raise it to allow room for you to work beneath it. Be sure not to get in contact with any moving or hot parts while underneath your Ram 1500!
-
Unbolt one bolt at each wheel location on each side of both front shocks using an impact wrench or ratchet and socket set. Use caution as these bolts are usually rusted tight; use care when removing them so that they don’t strip out their threads inside the mounting bracket – see photo below) Repeat this process on all four corners until all eight nuts have been removed. (Tip: use a breaker bar to help loosen these stubborn bolts)
-
Lift the lower control arm upwards and out of your way, then disconnect it from the upper shock mount.
-
Remove each bolt on both sides of an upper mounting bracket using a ratchet, socket set or wrench for loosening (ensure that you’re working with those mentioned in Step One). This should be fairly easy as they are not usually rusted tight; remove just enough to let them slide off their threads. Repeat this process at all four corners until eight nuts have been removed.
-
Then use brute force to pull down on the front end – but watch those fingers! The shocks will come right out once there is no pressure holding them up anymore. You might need someone’s help to hold the tires up while you’re pulling down on it.
-
Replace one old shock with a new rear end, and use an impact wrench or socket set for tightening all bolts back onto their mounting brackets properly (to avoid stripping threads). Repeat this process at both corners until both new shocks are installed.
-
Once every bolt has been tightened correctly, lower your vehicle from its jack placement by allowing the frame to touch the ground – then tighten one last time using your ratchet, manual wrench or sockets.
-
Now that those front shocks have been replaced, make sure you don’t neglect anything else! Check air pressure in tyres as well as fluids; change oil if needed/recommended and inspect brake pads before driving.
What to Do if Your New Shocks Are Too Short:
If the new shocks you purchased for your Dodge Ram 1500 are too short, there’s a good chance they were made for another vehicle. To ensure that this doesn’t happen again in future jobs, write down what length shock your truck needs and how long it is so you don’t make the same mistake twice! This information will save you time and money when shopping around at other stores or online. It may take some research on your end as not all auto parts suppliers list this information. However, if someone can help measure – such as an employee of the store where you purchase them from – then it won’t be a problem.
